Housing Defects by Decade

The evolution of the house has been fuelled over the years by changing consumer needs along with technical innovation. Some have brought great benefits, others have inflicted misery and, in some cases blight, on houses in that particular form. We can take the liberty of dividing up the history of the modern home into decades. Each innovation of each decade is characterised by particular issues.

Having completed 2 746 reports on defective housing in my career as a Structural Engineer, I have found certain defects are endemic with particular eras of house building. There is great advantage in having an awareness of defects characteristic to each decade of house building.

This fascinating presentation will give the audience a background to the changes in house building practice over the last century and a half, and with the assistance of images illustrate defects to look out for. A 15 page technical paper will be available with this presentation.
