How do I make a compelling case to have me as your speaker?
Answer – draw on my experience as a speaker secretary and remember what my common frustrations were. So here’s my three point plan to entice you to book me!

First – Prompt Replies! Being a speaker secretary is a bit like being a juggler, and you don’t want too many balls in the air at any one time. I aim to reply to any enquiry within 24 hours. This means having my diary to hand whenever I go away.

Second – Make the presentation compelling and absorbing, so the secretary becomes the toast of the club/society! An absorbing talk can emanate from any topic. The key is painstaking research, looking for that irony or coincidence that transforms a simple fact into a wow moment. I work on the basis of every slide I show must haves a captivating story attached to it.

Third – Reliability, starting with basics; clarity over equipment required/provided. Knowledge of the venue location and optimum route there. To overcome technical glitches, I normally carry two of most things, the speaker being one exception!

My Background

I guess it all started when I was about 12 and had returned from a three week holiday staying with a family in Austria, unusual for that time. Asked by my teacher, Mr Harris, to get up in front of the class and talk about my holiday – no warning, no script, it could have been a classroom humiliation. I focused on everyday things that were different in Austria, and somehow pulled it off!

Wind forward a few decades and I found myself, due to a series of coincidences, in demand as a speaker because of my professional work. The first presentation at the NHBC National Field Conference, in front of 500 people, was preceded by some excellent training. A love of speaking and presenting was born and continues!
